Step 1. warming-up

Qs:— What do you know about the American writer Mark Twain 

—Do you know any of his works  Can you name any of them 

Step2  Reading & Doing

  1 .Task: Find out more information about Mark Twain .Turn to page 23.

  2 .Scanning : Read the passage ABOUT MARK TWAIN carefully and then complete the following chart.

Real name of Mark Twain

Date of birth

Places where he lived

Jobs

Names of three of his famous stories

Writing style

Purpose : This activity is designed to help Ss get more information about Mark Twain .

Step3  Pre-reading

Qs :__ A rich person gives you a large amount of money to use as you like. What will you do with it   Why  

   __Have you ever made a bet with a friend   If so , what did you bet on   How did you feel about the bet after it was won or lost  

   __ Have your ever read the story “ The Million Pound Bank-Note”   Have you seen the movie   If so , what did you think it  

Step4   Presenting the play summary

Let the students know the summary of the Million Pound Bank-Note .

Henry , a San Francisco businessman is rescued at sea by a British ship that takes him to London where he finds himself without money , friends or the hope of finding  a good job. Hungry and alone , he walks the streets of the city when unexpectedly he is asked to a large and grand house , Two rich brothers , Roderick and Oliver , have made a secret bet . Roderick believes that a man cannot survive in the city for a month with only a million pound bank-note in his possession but Oliver believes he can . The play takes us along on Henry’s misadventures with humour and surprise to discover who will win the bet .

Purpose: This activity is designed to help Ss understand as much background about the play as possible .

Step 5  Listening

Let the students listen to the play and try to get the general idea of Scene 3 Act One and enjoy the play .

1 .Task : Scanning :let the students do detailed reading and try to find out the features of a play .
